QUALITY OF LIFE CHECK

Every dog or cat is different when it comes to quality of life evaluation. Being pet owners we know very well if something is out of sorts with our pets. When talking about the quality of life with an ongoing chronic disease like cancer, organ failures (kidney, heart or liver failures), chronic painful osteoarthritis with an inability to walk and do daily activities without pain and discomfort or any other health condition that is not responding to treatment and making our beloved pet suffer any longer needs serious reconsideration.

Because animals can’t talk and tell us about their suffering and pain, a quality of life scale has been developed as a guide. The quality of life scale is below for reference. We definitely can help to evaluate the quality of life of your beloved pet.

VACCINATION & CHECKUP

Vaccinations are divided into primary vaccination and annual vaccination. When vaccinations are done, you will get a full physical examination before the vaccination. All pets need to be completely healthy before vaccinations are done, sick pets can not be vaccinated for safety and health reasons. If the pet is found to be sick or unwell on physical examination, the vaccination will be postponed to a later date and the immediate health issues need to be addressed before coming back on another day for vaccination.

PUPPY & KITTEN VACCINATION
  • 1st vaccine: 6-8 weeks old
  • 2nd vaccine: 10-12 weeks old
  • 3rd vaccine: 14-16 weeks old

The next vaccination will be 1 year from the 3rd vaccination every year for life for cats and dogs. 1-2 weeks after the 3rd vaccine pets can socialise. If the vaccination protocol was broken for any reason, booster shots are needed to get full immunity.

ANNUAL VACCINATION

Annual vaccinations are done 1 year later from the 3rd primary vaccine. It’s done every year for life. If the protocol was broken for any reason, 2 monthly booster doses are required to get the immunity back up to date. For new client's, the previous vaccination certificates, vaccination cards or any sort of records or history are needed to do accurate vaccinations. Heartworm, intestinal worm, flea and tick prevention will be discussed and done at vaccination appointments on request. Advice on nutrition and wellbeing is included in the appointment.

ROUTINE PREVENTATIVES

Routine preventions are vaccination, heartworm prevention, intestinal worm prevention and ticks and fleas prevention. Please look at Vaccination & Checkup for vaccination protocol.

INTESTINAL WORM PREVENTION

Intestinal worm preventions are done from 2-4 weeks old by the breeder and continued every fortnight by new pet owners until 3 months old. Once a month worm prevention is from 3 months old until 6 months old, then once every 3 months for life depending on environmental and feeding factors.

HEARTWORM PREVENTION

Heart worm is a deadly infection brought by infected mosquitoes biting your dogs. It is preventable by accurately choosing the right product. We do advise on products tailored for personal situations. Heartworm prevention can be done on monthly basis versus yearly, based on product.

FLEA & TICK PREVENTION

Flea and tick prevention is important to keep our pets healthy. Numerous products can be discussed on personal preferences. All the preventions can be discussed at vaccination appointments or at any other vet appointment.

geriatric examination

A geriatric examination is done for pets that are 7 years and above.  Even though your pets are still running and doing activities as if they are 1-2 years old, when they reach 7 years it is categorised as seniors. As pet owners, we can do much to help pets live comfortable lives as super seniors. Our ability to recognise and manage pain, anxiety, hygiene and other signs may affect the quality of life.

We offer Geriatric examination with annual blood and urinalysis to keep your pets healthy and treat any underlying age-related illness relatively early to keep our beloved pets comfortable.

Early diagnosis and treatment of osteoarthritis for example can support a pet's mobility and keep them happy and comfortable for longer by changing to an appropriate diet, joint supplements, weight management and pain management for a better quality of life.

MICROCHIPPING

A microchip is a tiny computer chip about the size of a grain of rice, which has an identification number programmed into it

The microchip:

  • is inert
  • has no battery
  • uses no energy
  • lasts for the life of an animal

The microchip is injected under the animal's skin between the shoulder blades. It is a simple procedure when performed by qualified implanters. To identify the animal, a scanner that reads microchip numbers is passed over the animal's skin. The scanned number can then be checked against a register, which has details of the animal's ownership. Microchipping not only identifies your pet for life, but it can save your pet's life. All cats and dogs must be microchipped before registration with the council for the first time.

Benefits of microchipping

A microchip provides a permanent form of identification which can quickly reunite owners with lost or injured pets. This could save your pet's life — sadly, many pets that end up in pounds and shelters are not identified and have to be re-homed because their owners cannot be located. All cats and dogs aged 3 months and over must be registered with the local council. A source number is required prior to microchipping and registration under the owner. HUMANE EUTHANASIA AT HOME

Euthanasia is not easy for any pet owner, however, it is necessary when the time comes. It’s important to plan for the end of life care before the time comes to make the process less painful for everyone. The quality of life check helps to plan and coax the decision, hopefully relieving the anxiety around the whole process.

Euthanasia is an anaesthetic injection that’s done humanely to end ongoing or prolonged suffering. We can provide a quality of life check to help you to decide if it’s the right time to kindly let go. Home euthanasia is more peaceful with the comfort of people and familiar surroundings at home. We provide a detailed process of the procedure before it’s done. It can be a very distressing situation for anybody, more so for kids in the family. For that reason we advise keeping kids away to reduce anxiety and stress. We will provide sedation as part of the process to keep your pet calm. An intravenous catheter will be placed on the front arm to facilitate the process. Time will be given to say your final goodbyes to your beloved pet before sedation and after intravenous catheter placement before administering the drug. We allow all the time needed to say your final goodbye.

We also offer cremation services and can take your pets remains with us for cremation and return the ashes to you as per personal preferences. We offer cremation services with or without the return of ashes. Cremation packages are available to choose from below.
